PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

"On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me,

and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, 'Out of the believer's heart shall flow rivers of living water.'"

Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified."

John 7:37-39

SERVICE FOR THE LORD'S DAY

Prelude "Rhosymedre" Ralph Vaughn-Williams

Welcome and Announcements

GATHERING AROUND GOD'S WORD

Introit "God So Loved the World" Bob Chilcott Chancel Choir

Welcoming the Light of Christ

Pastor: Who is the light of the world?

Acolytes: Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

All: The light no darkness can overcome.

World Prayer - in unison

God of all people and nations, you come to us in every time and place,
and you speak to us in our own language. Pour out your Holy Spirit, here and now, upon all your people--sons and daughters, young and old.
Let us see visions and dream dreams of the new creation you have promised,
so that we may tell the world of your saving power and teach all your children to call upon your name; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Call to Worship

O Lord, how great and wonderful are your works!
In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.
They all look to you to give them their food in due season.
When you give to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.
When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.
Therefore, I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have breath.

*Hymn No. 129 "Come, O Spirit, Dwell Among Us" EBENEZER

*Call to Confession

Jesus said, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, 'Out of the believer's heart shall flow rivers of living water.'" With confidence in the grace of Jesus Christ and with hope in the life-changing power of the Holy Spirit, let us confess our sins before God and one another.

*Prayer of Confession

Gracious God, by your Spirit you have called us to live as one body, the body of Christ-- feeding the hungry and welcoming the stranger; healing the sick and comforting those in sorrow; seeking the lost and caring for the least. We confess that we have not lived according to your Word, failing to love one another as Christ loves us. Teach us to love and care for all your children. Fill us with your Spirit of compassion and joy; through Jesus Christ our Savior.

Time for silent confession.

And all God's people said: Amen.

*Declaration of Forgiveness

On the same day he rose from the dead, Jesus came and found his disciples locked in a house, and terrified. And he stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." He showed them the wounds in his hands and side, and he breathed on them, saying "Receive the Holy Spirit.
If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven." Friends, I declare to you by the power of the Holy Spirit: in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

*Glory Be to the Father

Hymn No. 577
Avery and Marsh

*The Peace of Christ

As forgiven people, washed in water and born of the Spirit, let us share the peace of Christ with one another. The peace of Christ be with you.
And also with you.

Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.

RESPONDING TO GOD'S WORD

*Hymn No. 443 "O Christ, the Great Foundation" (Verses 1 - 2)

The Baptism of Russell Fulcher

Presentation

Profession of Faith (Responsive Apostles' Creed)

Do you believe in God, the Father almighty?

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ?

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Thanksgiving Over the Water

The Baptism

Laying on of Hands

Welcoming the Confirmation Class

Russell, Wyatt, Desmond and Tabitha have been received into the one holy catholic and apostolic church through baptism and through profession of their faith. God has made them members of the household of God, to share with us in the priesthood of Christ. Let us welcome them.

With joy and thanksgiving we welcome you into Christ's church to share with us in his ministry, for we are all one in Christ.

*Communion Hymn No. 443 "O Christ the Great Foundation" (Verse 4)

This is the moment glorious when he who once was dead

Shall lead His church victorious, Their champion and their head.

The Lord of all creation His heavenly kingdom brings,

The final consummation, The glory of all things.

The Eucharist

Invitation to the Lord's Table

Prayer of Great Thanksgiving and the Lord's Prayer

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is truly right and our greatest joy...

Breaking of the Bread

Communion of the People

The Presbyterian Church practices open communion for all those who have been baptized and who profess Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. If your tradition permits, you are welcome to share the table with us. If you are uncomfortable doing so, please use this time as a time of prayer and reflection. Our usual practice is to eat the bread together to symbolize the unity we share in Christ, and we receive the cup as individuals to acknowledge the very personal need for forgiveness by God's grace. You will be served by the elders at your seat.

THE BATTERED WOMENS' SHELTER: During the last decade, domestic violence has been identified as one of the major causes of emergency room visits by women. In 29% of all violence against women by a lone offender, the perpetrator was an intimate (husband, ex-husband, boyfriend or ex-boyfriend). The rest are made up of strangers, friends, or acquaintances. In order to assist women who go to battered womens' shelters to find protection, the 2008 confirmation class has begun a drive to collect useful items that could benefit them. Items being collected are (1) paper towels (2) toilet paper (3) laundry soap (4) dish soap (5) dryer sheets (6) small trash bags (7) 13 gal-kitchen trash bags (8) cleaning supplies and (9) sizes 2, 3, or 4 diapers. (These items are being collected in the front of the sanctuary). Donating a few simple household items can keep the shelter in good condition and also help get abused women back on their feet.

ADULT DISCUSSION SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS - "Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy."

Time with the Children - A Kite Litany

Kites need the wind to lift them off the ground and send them skyward.
We need God's Holy Spirit to lift us out of our daily routine, inspiring us and allowing us to inspire others.
Lord, send forth your Spirit of wonder.
Sometimes the world really can be made better with just some sticks, tape, paper, and paint.
Lord, send forth your Spirit of creativity.
We have been given everything we need to soar in safety and with assurance.
Lord, send forth your Spirit of trust.
People in despair cannot always feel the lift of the wind and the healing warmth of the sun.
Lord, send forth your Spirit of comfort.
Too many remain grounded by fear, prejudice, and poverty and do not remember how it feels to soar free.
Lord, send forth your Spirit of justice.
All kites should fly freely in fresh air above clean water and a healthy planet.
Lord, send forth your Spirit of healing.
The breath of the Spirit blows away all conflict and anger, and replaces them with understanding and compassion.
Lord, send forth your Spirit of peace.
The Holy Spirit holds us up and keeps us from falling as we strive to remain faithful.
Lord, send forth your Spirit of love.
It is a natural thing to ride freely on the wind as the power of the Holy Spirit lifts us up with the risen Christ.
Lord, send forth your Spirit of life everlasting.
