After an extended teleconference on Sunday, August 15th [2005] with Gordon Aeschliman, President of Target Earth International, everyone present was impressed and enthusiastically supportive of this choice. If you'd like to listen to the teleconference, we have it on CD. You can get more information on Target Earth at their site. And you get find out about Jaguar Creek where we will be staying.
For this, our first International Mission Trip, we will be relying heavily on the depth of experience
Target Earth brings to the picture, having hosted mission groups around the world for nearly 20
years. We have asked them to help us find and coordinate suitable projects, and have indicated our
strong interest in water projects, building projects, and medical nursing projects. They have assured
us that there are a wealth of opportunities for us to learn by serving in the local community. As one
specific example, the community of Armenia has made several requests to Target Earth for a local
laundry facility to eliminate the need for walking several miles to a river to wash clothing. This
project could fit very well with our expressed desire to be involved in water and building projects.
A worthwhile International Mission Trip requires the commitment and engagement of the entire
congregation. A small number of us will be spending a week in Belize working to make a positive
impact in the lives of a local community. But the true effectiveness of the Mission will be measured
by the changes it makes in all of us, both before and after the trip. Those who go will be the most
directly affected, but they will serve as Christ's ambassadors from the First World to the Third
World during the trip, and Christ's emissaries from the Third World to the First on their return. All
of us can be engaged in learning about the mission, supporting it with our prayers and finances, and
becoming engaged in the trip through logistical support, materials acquisition, and planning. Who can come? You can, if you feel the call. Are you a youth whose parents aren't going? You're welcome if your parents agree and we can pair you with a willing adult mentor. Are you an older adult who feels that you are not up to physically demanding work? Target Earth assures us that there are many jobs that will need your wisdom and experience. Is money an issue? Scholarships will be available to those who need financial assistance. Target Earth has recommended a maximum group size of around 25. A very informal straw poll around church indicates early interest from about 16 people. We plan on opening the trip to members of other congregations if there's extra space. We currently expect it to cost around $1000 per person, and are hoping to raise funds to cover half of that cost. A commitment and a deposit of $250 will be needed by September 30 from anyone who wants to go on the trip. If you'd like to go, please contact Dan Terpstra, Mission Planning Committee Chair, or Dale Hadden, Chair of Social Concerns. For scholarship requests contact either of the above, or Pastor Kerra. |
